# Understand Projects: A Shared Workspace for Your Team in Vincent

A Project is a shared workspace in Vincent where your team's files, conversations, and AI outputs on a matter live together. Learn what it does and does not do.

#### Summary

A Project is a shared workspace in Vincent where a team's conversations, files, work outputs, and matter details live in one place, so nobody re-briefs Vincent on work already done.

### Why This is Important

Legal work is collaborative, but research context usually is not. Each person uploads their own documents, asks their own questions, and passes results around by email or screenshot. Whoever picks up the matter next starts from nothing.

A Project holds that context for the whole team. Files are uploaded once and reach every member. Conversations and outputs created by any member appear in one organised view. An activity log records what was created and when, so a partner joining a matter halfway through can see what has already been asked and produced.

A Project is private from the moment it is created. Only the people invited to it, each with an assigned role, can see it.

### The Two Types of Project

You choose the type when you create the Project.

* **Matter:** for a case or a deal. A Matter project carries matter details: the matter name, the parties, and key facts. Use it when the unit of work has a client and a file behind it.
* **General:** for work that is not a matter: an internal programme, a recurring business-unit task, a compliance cycle. You skip the matter fields entirely and write free-text project instructions instead.

The feature is called Projects rather than Matters because not every team organises work into matters. In-house teams, transactional firms, and business operations staff may call the same unit of work a case, a deal, a programme, or something else again. The Project is the container; the type decides how much matter structure comes with it.

### What a Project Does Not Do

Knowing the current limits saves time. In this release:

* **No simultaneous co-editing.** Two people cannot work in the same conversation, draft, or table at once. A Project is a shared record of work, and each conversation belongs to the person who started it.
* **No client-facing sharing.** A Project is internal to your organisation. There are no shareable links, and everyone in a Project must be in the same organisation.
* **No connection to your other systems.** Billing, CRM, and document management are not connected. Everything a Project needs is added manually.
* **Not a document management system.** You can bring files in from a DMS, but versions are not kept in sync. A later version has to be added yourself.
* **Not a single control panel for the matter.** A Project is a working environment where a team's AI work accumulates.

### Best Practices & Pro Tips

Choose the type by the work, not by the department. A litigation team running a regulatory monitoring programme is better served by a General project than by a Matter project with empty matter fields. The matter structure is worth having when there is a client and parties to record, and it is friction when there is not.

Treat membership as a confidentiality control. Because a Project makes context visible to everyone in it, the invitation list is a substantive decision, not an administrative one. Check membership before adding anyone whose involvement could raise a conflict, and remove people when they roll off the matter.
