# Editing and Managing Your Skills

#### Summary

Once a Skill is in your panel, you can edit it to refine how it behaves, change who can use it, or remove it if it's no longer useful. This guide covers editing, changing visibility, and deleting Skills, the day-to-day maintenance that keeps your Skills library sharp.

#### Why This is Important

Skills aren't set-and-forget. Practice evolves, firm standards change, jurisdictions get updated, and Skills that were perfect six months ago may need adjustment today. Regular maintenance, small edits when something drifts, prompt cleanup when a Skill isn't used, keeps your Skills panel focused on what actually helps you work.

A well-maintained Skills panel also makes Vincent more accurate. When you have a tight collection of Skills you actually use, Vincent picks the right one more often. When the panel is cluttered with old drafts, unused imports, and overlapping variants, Vincent has to guess between competing options, and it doesn't always guess right.

#### What You Can Edit vs. What's Read-Only

Not every Skill in your panel is fully editable. There are two categories:

* **Skills you created** (either manually or via Vincent's guided setup) are **fully editable**. You own them and can change any field.
* **Skills installed from the Skills Library** default to **Read-only · Just me**. You can use them and remove them, but not directly edit them. To customize a Library Skill, use **Duplicate and edit** to create an editable copy while preserving the original.

You'll see the read-only status displayed next to any Skill installed from the Library. See Browsing and Installing Skills from the Skills Library.

#### Step-by-Step Guide: Editing a Skill

**Step 1: Open the Skill**

1. On the Vincent home page, click **Customize** in the top right.
2. Select the **Skills** sub-tab.
3. Select the Skill you want to edit from your list.

The Skill opens in the editor, showing the description, conditions, instructions, and any sub-skills or assets.

**Step 2: Update the Content You Want to Change**

You can modify any editable field:

* **Description:** refine to better capture what the Skill does. This field is especially worth revisiting, because Vincent uses it to identify when to trigger the Skill. A weak description leads to missed activations or unwanted ones.
* **Conditions:** add, remove, or edit the activation triggers. Use **Add condition** to add a new trigger.
* **Instructions:** refine how Vincent handles the task. This is where most iterative improvement happens.
* **Sub-skills:** extend the Skill with related instruction branches using **Add sub-skill**.
* **Assets:** attach or update reference materials (checklists, templates, legislation) using **Add asset**.

**Step 3: Update Visibility (Optional)**

Use the visibility dropdown next to the Skill name to change who can use the Skill:

* **Inactive:** Vincent doesn't use this Skill in any conversations. Useful for parking a Skill you're not ready to run.
* **Published · Just me:** Vincent uses this Skill in your own conversations only.
* **Publish to Organization:** sends the Skill to your Publisher for approval. Once approved, all Users in your organization can use it. See Submitting a Skill for Organization-Wide Use.

**Step 4: Save**

Click **Save** to apply your changes. The updated Skill takes effect in your next conversation.

#### Editing a Skill Mid-Conversation

You don't always need to open the Skills editor to refine a Skill. When you notice something you want to change while using Vincent, you can just tell Vincent what to adjust. for example, *"From now on, keep the summary shorter"* or *"Don't include citations in this letter."*

For persistent changes, follow up in the Skills editor to make the update stick across future conversations. Mid-conversation adjustments apply to that conversation; the editor is where you make changes permanent.

#### Step-by-Step Guide: Deleting a Skill

Removing a Skill you no longer use keeps your panel focused and helps Vincent choose the right Skill more accurately.

**Step 1: Open the Skill's Menu**

1. On the Vincent home page, click **Customize** in the top right.
2. Select the **Skills** sub-tab.
3. Locate the Skill you want to remove.
4. Click the three-dot menu (**⋮**) on the Skill card.

**Step 2: Select Remove**

Click **Remove**. The Skill is deleted from your panel.

You can delete any Skill you added to your panel, both Skills you created yourself and Skills installed from the Library. Removing a Skill installed from the Library doesn't affect the Library itself; you can re-install it any time.

{% hint style="warning" %}
**Deleting a Skill is permanent for your panel.** If you delete a custom Skill you created, its instructions, conditions, and any attached assets are lost. If you might want the Skill later, set it to **Inactive** instead of removing it — that preserves the Skill without letting Vincent trigger it.
{% endhint %}

#### Keeping Your Skills Panel Healthy

A few habits keep your Skills panel useful over time:

* **Revisit descriptions periodically.** If a Skill isn't triggering when you expect it to, the description is usually the reason. Sharpening the description often fixes activation problems without touching the instructions.
* **Consolidate overlapping Skills.** If two Skills cover similar ground with small differences, Vincent may pick the wrong one. Merge them into a single Skill with clearer conditions, or delete the weaker one.
* **Retire what you don't use.** A Skill you haven't triggered in months is probably not helping. Remove it (or set it to Inactive) so the panel stays focused on what you actually use.
* **Update after jurisdictional changes.** When a law changes in a jurisdiction your Skill covers, open the Skill and update the instructions or assets. Skills don't refresh themselves.

#### Best Practices & Pro Tips

* **Edit the description first when a Skill misfires.** If Vincent triggers a Skill on the wrong prompts (or fails to trigger it on the right ones), the fix is almost always in the description or conditions, not the instructions. Vincent uses those fields to decide *when* to activate the Skill; the instructions only control *how* it behaves once activated.
* **Use "Inactive" as a soft delete.** Before removing a Skill you've spent time on, set it to Inactive for a few weeks. If you don't miss it, delete it then. This prevents the frustration of rebuilding a Skill you deleted too quickly.
