# How to Find and Search Books and Journals

### Summary

Find authoritative secondary sources by searching for **Books and Journals** in vLex Library. You can locate publications using the main search bar with filters, the Browse tool, or by running a targeted Advanced Search.

### Why This is Important

Books and journals provide essential expert analysis, commentary, and in-depth guidance that is crucial for building a comprehensive legal argument. Knowing how to find and navigate these secondary sources enriches your primary law research and deepens your understanding of complex legal topics.

### How to Find Books and Journals

You can use several methods to locate publications:

* **Smart Searchbar:** Enter a title or topic and select the **Books and journals** filter on the results page.
* **Browse Tool:** Select **Browse** from the main menu, then click **Books and journals** to explore by publisher or view a full list.
* **Advanced Search:** Select **Books and journals** as the **Content** type to access specific filters like **Author**, **Publisher**, or **Source**.

### How to Navigate a Publication

Once you open a book or journal, you will see an overview page.

1. **General Information:** The left side displays key details about the publication.
2. **Table of Contents / Issue List:** The right side (or center, for journals) displays the structure of the publication. Click any chapter or article title to open it.
3. **Search Within:** Use the search bar at the top-left of the overview page to find keywords *within that specific publication*.

### Best Practices & Pro Tips

* **Use Exact Title Search:** When using Advanced Search, place a title in quotation marks (e.g., `"Chitty on Contracts"`) in the **Title** field to find a specific book.
* **Explore Related Content:** Inside an article or chapter, use the **Related** tab to let Vincent suggest other relevant materials based on citation patterns.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://support.vlex.com/vlex-library/vlex-library-home/content-and-document-types/how-to-find-and-search-books-and-journals.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
